Abstract

THE SERMON AND RELİGİOUS STORY İN THE UMAYYAD PERİOD
The Umayyad period was a period that sermon and religious ritual developed in a serious sense. Especially during the Umayyad period, this type was more popular because the period was closer to the First Islamic period and this aspect must be embraced by the society based on worship. Moreover, during the Umayyad period, the rise of the political turmoil and the revolts against the authority ensured the sermons supported by the caliphs. Therewithal, the Umayyad Caliphate Muâviye ordered the assembly to be held every morning after the morning and evening prayers and gave special statues to those who addressed religious issues. To keep society away from extremism, to keep away from the world and to be kept in the Hereafter, to be encouraged for goodness and forbearance, to get rid of non-moral behavior, can be realized only with religious advice when society's belief values are taken into consideration. In all of these, especially during the Umayyad period, this type was very popular and was used not only by authority but also by political groups in this period as a means of religious and political propaganda.
